There is complete and utter silence as what Egon said sank in. Garrettt was the first to break it. “ That’s it, She’s just gonna die?”
“I’m sorry.”
Roland’s tone was shocked and rejecting. “ I don’t believe it, Kylie’s a fighter. There’s no way she’d let any ghost kill her.” Janine was slumped in a chair, her head in her hands sobbing uncontrollably, as Egon puts his arm around her to comfort her Eduardo grabs a pack and trap and slams out of the door, the echo ringing in defiance and finality around the room. They all heard the squeel of tires as the Ecto-1 peels out of the garage and down the street. Garrett’s eyes are still fixed on the door. “ Roland, do you think we should go after him.?”
“ No, it’s his way of dealing with it. You never know, maybe he’ll be able to make a difference.” The heart monitor’s bleeping begins to slow die as the toxins begin to take a hold on Kylie’s body.
“ No way is some stupid class twelve gonna take Kylie away from me. I’ll get him to reverse it, I’ll force him. After I’ve put him through hell and back. No way is he gonna kill her. Nothing is. I love her to much for that.” Eduardo’s face was stony as he jumped a light and carried on going, anger battled with pain and fear to make a dangerous cocktail of emotions. The P.K.E. on the dashboard lit up and got steadily stronger as he approached the hospital.
Screeching to a halt he climbed out and stomped into the hospital. A blonde nurse stopped and smiled pleasantly. “ Can I help you?”
“ Yeah, I need to look around.”
“ Why?” Weduardo put on his best intelligent voice and ground out. “ I’m a ghostbuster and I have reason to believe a viral demon is in this building.” The nurse’s eyes widened and she said, “ A figure in a dark robe?”
“ Yeah.”
“ A lot of the ‘flu patients have been aacting strangly, mumbling about black cowls and death. And there have been some weird symptoms, like burns on their skin. “ Eduardo muttered quietly to himself, “ It’s payback time.”
“ What?”
“ Uh, Could I take a look around the basement?” The nurse sighed before reluctantly agreeing.
The basement was full of medical supplies, boxes stacked ten deep lined the walls, dim lights flickered her and there. “ Come out, come out wherever you are.” A soft female voice answered, ‘What do you want? Hurry, my time runs short.’
“ I want you to show yourself.”
A figure, completely covered by a dark robe and cowl stepped int the dim light, seeing it he realised it wasn’t any taller than Kylie, and completely unthreatening. “Your the viral demon?”
‘Only when necessary.’
“What does that mean? Tell me or get nuked.”
‘What’s in it for me?’
“Your afterlife. Give Kylie her life back.”
‘I need it more than she.’
“Liar.”
He raised the proton gun and let his finger squeeze the trigger. ‘Wait! You wan’t Kylie’s life back? Then give me my own.’
“What?!”
‘My bones lie unburied on barren stone. Take them to sacred ground and all will be cured.’
“You want me to take your bones to a cemetary and what, just leave them there?”
‘Yes.’
“And the others will be cured?”
‘Yes but hurry, their time, as well as mine, runs short.’A hand points to a corner where a few bones lie. Eduardo picked them up and raced to the cemetary, praying that he wasn’t being tricked.
Eduardo put the bones down on the cold, wet grass and waited, panic surging in his head as he thought that Kylie could already be gone. The ghost appeared in front of him. ‘Thankyou. The viral demon I was has gone. The others will recover. It was all neccessary. Tell my Great Niece that she is the most exasperating, stubborn child imaginable.’
“What?” The ghost pulled back the cowl and he saw a familiar face looking at him. The nose and cheekcones were precisely like Kylie’s, The only difference was her eyes, which were a deep blue. ‘I died of a broken heart many years ago and for the many sins I had committed I was punished for by being sealed in the hospital basement by Gods powers. He said that after one hundred years I would be released. Then the only way I may cross over is to bring about the love of two mortals. This I have now done. She loves you as much as you do she. The rest is up to you. Love is the cure Eduardo Rivera, Love is the cure for everything. Now I go.
There is a blinding flash of white light. Eduardo could make out a man’s silhouette. The two ghosts join hands and walk to what ever lay beyond the portal.
Now back at the firehouse Eduordo glanced at his watch. 2:39 A.M. (Not a coincedence) He walked over to where Kylie lay and leant over her. The heartbeat on the monitor is stronger, and her breathing was more regular. Breathing a sigh of relief he brushed a strand of hair out of her face. Kylie’s eyelids fluttered and she opened murky green eyes to see Eduardo looking down into her face.
“Welcome back to the world of the living Chika.”
“Thanks.”
“For what?”
“Saving my life.”
“How did you know?”
“Call it an “out of body” experiance.”
With that she sat up, put her arms around his neck and dragged him down for a long, lingering kiss. Behind them Garrett and Roland, who were woken up by the hushed voices grinned at each other silently. Also watching were Janine and Egon who smiled from ear to ear. From another dimension Kylie’s great-aunt leans her head against the shoulder of the man who she died for and smiles at cupid’s elegant touch.
